Development of photographic silver halide material, e.g. color paper, uses uncomplexed polyphosphonic or polyphosphinic acid with biodegradable iron chelate bleach polycarboxylic acid. Development of a photographic silver halide material comprises: (a) bleaching a selectively exposed and color-developed material with a composition containing an iron chelate of a biodegradable aminopolycarboxylic acid ligand as bleach and >= 0.008 mole/l uncomplexed polyphosphonic or polyphosphinic acid or salt; and (b) fixing with a composition containing fixative and >= 0.01 mole/l polycarboxylic acid or salt. An Independent claim is also included for development of such material in a processor, including: (a) bleaching with a composition containing an iron chelate of methyliminodiacetic acid or salt at an iron concentration of >= 0.001 mole/l as bleach and >= 0.01 mole/l uncomplexed aminotrismethylphosphonic acid; and (b) fixing with a composition containing >= 0.2 mole/l thiosulfate fixative and >= 0.01 mole/l citric, ethylenediaminedisuccinic, ethylenediaminetetraacetic or diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid or salt.
