The personal navigation method uses transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves for determining the actual position and a compass disc using the earth's magnetic field for providing angular direction pulses, e.g. via cooperating active photodiodes around the periphery of the disc and stationary passive photodiodes (5). The angular direction pulses are stored in a navigation device for comparison with a stored route, for supplying guidance directions to the user via a display. An Independent claim for a navigation device system is also included.
