A porous membrane is produced by coating a corrosion-resisting metal wire fabric with a paste formed by mixing a polytetrafluoroethylene powder with at least one wetting substance of the group consisting of ethyl, methyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl or isoamyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, acetone and acetic acid, fixing said paste in and on the fabric, and eliminating therefrom all the constituents of the paste with the exception of the polytetrafluoroethylene. The powder may be thoroughly mixed with an excess of ethyl alcohol, after which the excess of alcohol is removed so that the paste finally contains only about 40 % alcohol. The paste thus formed may be immersed in boiling alcohol after which the excess of alcohol is again removed until the proportion of alcohol in the paste is only 40% by weight. The paste may be treated by a solvent to extract therefrom the impurities initially present in the polytetrafluoro ethylene powder. |
