PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the thermal fatigue of a piston and the overcooling of an internal combustion engine while avoiding a reduction in engine efficiency as much as possible in a 6-cycle internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When a particular running state where the thermal load of an internal combustion engine is low is determined by a running state detecting means 3A (e.g. the low load of the internal combustion engine, the temperature TEX of the internal combustion engine being lower than a specified temperature, or the rotational speed of the same being lower than a specified rotational speed is detected), among first intake, compression, expansion, first exhaustion, second intake and second exhaustion, the operations of the intake and exhaust valves of the second intake and second exhaustion processes are stopped to prevent the overcooling of the internal combustion engine while efficiently operating the internal combustion engine). If not, the first intake, the compression, the expansion, the first exhaustion, the second intake and the second exhaustion are sequentially executed to cool the internal combustion engine.
