PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, a specific isoxazolylthiophene compound, useful in treating/preventing various kinds of osteopathy and neuropathy through specifically potentiating the action of a cell differentiation inducer existing in vivo. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of the formula [R1 is H or a 1-5C alkyl; R2 is a 1-5C alkyl or the like; R3 is cyano or a group of the formula CONR4R5 (R4 and R5 are each H, phenyl, or the like); n is 0-2], e.g. 4-(isoxazol-5-yl)-3-methyl-5-(methylthio)thiophene-2-carbonitrile. The compound of the formula is obtained by the following process: a diketone compound and carbon disulfide are subjected to condensation reaction in the presence of a base, one of the carbon disulfide-derived sulfur atoms in the resultant condensate is thioetherified with a haloacetonitrile such as chloroacetonitrile, the rest of the sulfur atoms are similarly thioetherified with a compound of the formula R2-X1 (X1 is chlorine or the like) followed by intramolecular cyclization to form the corresponding thiophenecarbonitrile compound, which, in turn, is formylated and then cyclized.
