PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetoresistance effect type thin film magnetic head which improves the surface condition of each shielding layer while preventing the occurrence of discontinuity in a lead wire connected to a magnetoresistance effect element due to difference in the level of the shielding layer and difference in the level of a connection part between the lead wire and another lead wire, improves the characteristics of the magnetoresistance effect element and enhances the shielding effect of the shielding layer. SOLUTION: The magnetoresistance effect type thin film magnetic head has a 1st lead wire 15 and a 2nd lead wire 19 divided into two and electrically connected by way of an inter-wire connection filler 17C. One end of the 1st lead wire 15 is connected to a magnetoresistance effect element 14 and the other end is disposed in the region of a lower shielding layer 12 and does not cross the edge part of the layer 12. The filler 17C is the same layer as an upper shielding layer 17 and is formed in the same production step. The 2nd lead wire 19 is disposed on a surface-flattened embedded insulator 18.
