PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain stable productivity by stably ensuring the ability to hold and carry a transfer material, preventing decrease in the service life of each component of a transfer device, assuring a stable transfer-material detecting operation, and reducing downtime frequency. SOLUTION: An abrasive roller 5k and a backup brush 18, a transfer cleaner 16 and a backup brush 17, and a light-emitting sensor 53a and light-receiving sensor 53b serving as a transfer-material detector 53 are provided with a transfer sheet 5f sandwiched between them. During the movement of a transfer cleaner 16, the output of the light-receiving sensor 53b is monitored, and in response to a signal indicative of the satisfactory cleaned state of the transfer- material carrier sheet 5f, the movement of the transfer cleaner 16 is stopped. Similarly, an abrasive roller 5k is caused to move, the surface of the transfer- material carrier sheet 5f is detected by the transfer-material detector 53, and an abrading operation is suitably continued or finished.
