PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily conduct scanning by placing two platens each provided with a scanner at a prescribed angle so as to configure an image reader that reads an image of a spread book original. SOLUTION: The platen 6 tilted via an edge part 7 is placed to a horizontal platen 5 of the image reader 1, the scanners 10, 10a are placed respectively to the platens 5, 6 and image information is obtained by CCDs 15, 15a. A control means is used to allow the scanners 10, 10a to read an image of an original so that their movement are not interrupted to each other, that is, to read a 1st page d1 and a 2nd page d2 of a book original at the same time.
