PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter for a plasma display panel which shields near- infrared radiatiated from a plasma display panel without damaging a display performance. SOLUTION: This filter for a plasma display panel has a layer containing a squarilium compound represented by general formula I on a transparent board. In formula I, R1, R2 and R3 are each independently an alkyl group capable of having a hydrogen atom and substituent group, a cycloalkyl group capable of having a substituent group, and an aryl or heteroaryl group capable of having a substituent group, while a 5-or 6-membered ring or a part thereof can be formed by connecting R1 and R2, or R2 and R3 with each other.
