摘要 PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for controlling call congestion in an ATM switching system is provided to prevent the overload and cell congestion of a switch module by previously discarding a cell in a subscriber module using an IPC cell. CONSTITUTION: A control part(50) controls cell congestion using an IPC cell. Subscriber parts(11-1N,21-2N), connected between subscribers and a switch part(30), cover the transmission of the cells to be transmitted and the cells received. Each subscriber part(11) is comprised of a subscriber access part(61), a cell transmit/receive part(63), and an IPC cell check part(62). The subscriber access part(61), connected with a subscriber, is in charge of access. The cell transmit/receive part(63) transmits the cells to be transmitted to the switch part(30) and the cells received from the switch part(30) to the subscriber access part(61). The IPC cell check part(62), if an IPC cell is received from the cell transmit/receive part(63), checks the received IPC cell and obtains control information. Based on cell congestion information or cell congestion release information, the IPC cell check part(62) requests the cell transmit/receive part(63) to discard a UBR(Unspecified Bit Rate) cell or to stop discarding the UBR cell. The switch part(30), composed of 3 layers, checks the routing tag of a received cell and executes switching. A cell congestion monitoring part(40) monitors whether cell congestion is generated in each of the ports of the switches of the switch part(30).
