A method, and related apparatus, for reducing transmit timing control messages in a communications system where there is relative motion between a first communications terminal and a second communications terminal. The method consists of reducing transmit timing control messaging sent by a first communications terminal to a second communications terminal by establishing a communications link between the first communications terminal and the second communications terminal. Then transmitting a transmit timing control message from the first communications terminal to the second communications terminal. Then periodically setting a transmit timing of the second communications terminal in response to the transmit timing control message. The transmit timing control message defines a timing rate-of-change due to the relative motion between the first communications terminal and the second communications terminal.
