Processing textile material in a stream of liquid consists in passing the material in sheet or web form within a conduit formed by opposite space walls which, together with the web, define a series of successive compartments, feeding treating liquid into the conduit at one end and withdrawing it at the other end, and compelling the treating liquid to successively pass through the series of compartments and to penetrate through the web while passing from one compartment to the next. Apparatus shown comprises trough 10 having overflow 14 and two undulating plates 16, 17 forming a conduit. Web 13 enters trough 10 and passes round guide rollers 11 and 12, through the conduit and out via roll 19 and a pair of squeeze rolls 20, 21. In passing upwardly between plates 16, 17, web 13 alternately contacts the plates at crests 18 so as to divide the conduit into separate compartments. Treating liquid 15 is sprayed into the conduit at 22 and passes through the web from one compartment to the next in contra-flow into the web. The spacing of plates 16, 17 may be adjustable and the web may move in the same direction as the flow of liquid. In other embodiments the plates are made plane with projecting ribs to contact the web and said ribs may carry rollers or other anti-friction means.</p> |
