PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound in a good efficiency by reacting a dichloroxylene derivative with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a palladium-based catalyst, a halogenated hydrogen-capturing agent and a specific compound in a two layer-based solvent. SOLUTION: This 3-isochromanone derivative of formula II is obtained by reacting anα,α'-dichloro-o-xylene derivative with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a catalyst system containing a palladium complex [e.g.; palladium chloride, tristriphenylphosphine palladium, etc.], (as a supporting ligand, a phosphine ligand, etc., are cited), a halogenated hydrogen-capturing agent (e.g.; lithium hydride) and an alkali metal bromide (e.g.; lithium bromide, potassium bromide, sodium bromide) in a two layer-based solvent consisting of an aromatic solvent (e.g.; benzene, toluene, xylene, a chlorobenzene) and an aqueous-based solvent (e.g.; water or a mixed solvent of water with tert-butyl alcohol).
