PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a sizing agent for threads, capable of imparting excellent smoothness, of excellent handling of threads and of reducing the quantity of fly waste by including a lowerα-olefin-modified polyvinyl alcohol-based resin and an alkali metal aromatic sulfonate (a formalin-condensed product). SOLUTION: This sizing agent for threads is prepared by including (A) 100 pts.wt. modified polyvinyl alcohol-based resin and (B) 0.01-20 pts.wt. (preferably 0.1-10 pts.wt.) at least one compound (e.g. an alkali metalα-naphthalenesulfonate) selected from an alkali metal aromatic sulfonate and its formalin-condensed product. The ingredient A has 1-24 mol% (preferably 2-15 mol%) <=4Cα-olefin unit (e.g. ethylene) in its molecule, has 100-5,000 (preferably 200-3,000) average polymerization degree and has 60-100% (preferably 70-99.9%) average saponification degree.
