PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively separating a polysaccharide of the major product from a by-produced halogen salt from a reaction mixture in preparing a carboxypolysaccharide polymer by a combination of ruthenium and an oxidizing agent. SOLUTION: A method for oxidizing a polysaccharide with an oxidizing agent composed of an halogen or an halogen acid or its salt to prepare a carboxypolysaccharide which comprises selectively adsorbing a carboxypolysaccharide from a mixed solution after reaction with the use of an adsorption carrier, and then recovering the adsorption-fixed carboxypolysaccharide to separate the carboxypolysaccharide from a halogen salt to be by-produced.
