PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten drawing machinability and electric discharge machining speed by inserting a Cu-Zn base alloy material between butt parts, and joining together compound wire rods by pressure contact, when an electrode wire for electric discharge machining is manufactured by drawing, after butt-joining compound wire rods having coating layer of Cu-Zn base alloy on the core material of Cu and Cu alloy. SOLUTION: Compound wire rods 6 formed by providing coating layer 6.2 of Cu-Zn base alloy on core material 6.1 of Cu and Cu alloy are gripped with clamps 1 and aligned, and the cut terminal ends of the respective wire rods 6 are butted against each other interposing an insert material 7 made of Cu-Zn base alloy material between. The wire rods 6 are pushed in the butt directions, and the insert material 7 of Cu-Zn base alloy and the cut terminal ends of the compound wire rods 6 are plastically deformed and joined together. Thereafter, burr 4" generated on the periphery of the pressure contact part is removed, the surface of the removed part is finished, and hence the long wire rod having pressure contact part 5" is obtained. Hereby, a layer of Cu-Zn base alloy is insured on the pressure contact part and its vicinity, and drawing machinability and electric discharge machining speed can be improved.
