The time of contact between the sonotrode (2) and the cutting tool (3) is held constant by a controller. Preferred features: A rapid-response electronic control circuit continuously corrects ultrasonic system (1) amplitude, maintaining contact time constant, despite rapid changes in loading. A second control circuit, has responsiveness exceeding the rate of temperature variation in the system. This, with an actuator (6), is used to compensate longer-term clearance variations between tool and sonotrode, occasioned by wear and changing thermal conditions. A preset contact time is held constant. The control loops are coordinated in signal- and correction ranges. The desired value of contact time between sonotrode and cutting tool is adjusted by a micrometer screw, piezoelectric unit or actuator. It is minimized, tending towards zero. To compensate for wear- and thermal variation, a heated aluminum section is designed-in. Cutting and/or welding operations are intermittent. The cutting tool is fixed to the oscillating sonotrode. The mean gap width appears between this, and an associated rest surface opposite it.
|
