The telephone or telefax device has an optical scanner (1) with a light-sensitive device integrated in the handpiece housing, or the telephone housing in the case of a mobile radio telephone, for converting scanned visual information into corresponding digital signals. The scanning window is positioned at one end of the handpiece or the telephone housing, for use of the latter as a hand-held scanner, the scanner signals fed to a signal processor (7) with a controller (4), a microprocessor (3), a read-only memory (5), and a random-access memory (6).
