Preparation of thiols using catalysts containing zirconium oxide and magnesium oxide

A novel catalyst (I) based on mixed oxides of zirconium (Zr) and M (where M is magnesium or alkaline earth metal), which contains 0.2-20 wt. % M, is prepared by coprecipitation form a solution from an aqueous solution of a Zr salt and an aqueous solution of M nitrate or sulfate, followed by drying the gel at 50-200 degrees C. An Independent claim is included for the preparation of a thiol by contacting an alcohol with hydrogen sulfide in presence of (I).
