PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous antimicrobial composition capable of imparting antimicrobial and waterproof properties without using much organic solvent. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial composition is obtained by adding water to a water-miscible organic solution of an antimicrobial polymer comprising a salt of an anionic hydrophilic polymer and an antimicrobial quaternary ammonium so as to emulsify and to disperse. The hydrophilic polymer includes hydrophilic polysaccharides (carboxyl group-containing cellulose, carboxyl group- containing starch, pectic acid, alginic acid and their derivatives) or a hydrophilic resin. The quaternary ammonium salt can be a compound of the formula (R1 to R4 are same or different each other and each a saturated/unsaturated 1-30C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, aralkyl group, mono/dialkylphenoxy group or the like and at least one of them is the saturated/unsaturated 10-30C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; X is a halogene).
