PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce the subject hydrazines without using a metal reducing agent such as tin chloride by reacting a specific diazonium salt with (hydrogen)sulfurous salts. SOLUTION: A derivative represented by formula I [X is H or a halogen; Y is a halogen; W is H or ZR (Z is O or S; R is H, a 1-6C alkyl or the like); Q is H, ammonium or an alkali metal], e.g. sodium 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5- hydroxyphenylhydrazine-N,N'-disulfonate. The above compound is produced by reacting a diazonium salt prepared by diazotizing an aniline derivative represented by formula II with sulfurous salts (e.g. sulfurous acid) or hydrogensulfurous salts (e.g. ammonium hydrogensulfite) at pH 5.5-8 and about 0-80 deg.C reactional temperature for about 30 min to about 24 h.
