PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a clear high resolution image up to the peripheral part thereof by regulating the quantity of light of a light beam emitted from a light emitting section based on image information thereby sustaining the light beam for exposing an image carrier in optimal state depending on the resolution. SOLUTION: An electrostatic latent image is formed on an image carrier, i.e., a photosensitive drum 7, being rotary driven with a drum motor 9 through a focus lens 6 by exposing and scanning the photosensitive drum 7 with a laser beam 23 projected from an emission signal generator 5 through a light quantity regulating section 1, a collimator 2, and a cylindrical lens 3. A CPU 10 controls a voltage being applied from a drive section 8 to the light quantity regulating section 1 based on a resolution being set by an external unit, e.g. a host computer, or a setting section through a specified communication medium thus regulating the quantity of light of a laser beam projected from the emission signal generator 5.
