PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a merchandise checkout device which has the merchandise data gathering unit combined with an optical bar code data gathering unit. SOLUTION: The merchandise checkout device 10 has the optical bar code data gathering unit 12 including a 1st housing, a scale 16 in the 1st housing, a weighing plate on the scale, and the merchandise data gathering unit 14 in the 1st housing. The scale 16 includes a 1st window and a 2nd window 60 which pass scanning light arriving from the optical bar code data gathering unit. The merchandise data gathering unit includes a 2nd housing 102 having an opening adjacent to the 2nd window, a light source which lights up an merchandise placed on the 2nd window with nearly uniform light, a light splitting element 92 which splits the light collected from the merchandise into partial pieces of light having different wavelengths, a detector 94 which converts the energy included in the partial pieces of light to electric signals, and a control circuit 96 which generates from the merchandise a digital spectrum including information making it possible to identify the target article whose unit price is determined by digitizing the electric signals. |
