PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a camera not requiring a user to grasp the camera itself by the fingers or hand at the time of holding it and allowed to be surely held without covering respective parts such as an operation part, a lens and a monitor with the hand. SOLUTION: The upper sides of a camera front part 16 on which a photographing lens 12 is installed and a camera rear part 22 on which a liquid crystal monitor, a mode switch button, etc., are installed are mutually connected through a connection part 24 and the camera can be held by inserting a user's hand into a space formed between the front 16 and the rear 22. A release switch 28 is arranged on the upper surface of the connection part 24 and can be depressed by the thumb of the hand holding the camera. It is also available to form communicatable two-unit constitution by mutually separating an image pickup unit and a monitor unit or add a mechanism capable of controlling the extension/contraction of a distance between the front part 16 and the rear part 22.
