PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a neutron absorbing material with improved thermal shock resistance that prevents easy reduction of the furnace life of a reactor control rod caused by the cracks in the neutron absorbing material due to thermal stress. SOLUTION: A neutron absorbing material is composed by a boron carbide/ silicon carbide fiber composite sintered body consisting of the boron carbide(B4C) containing silicon carbide(SiC) fiber whose surface is covered with boron nitride(BN) by 10-30 vol.%. A BN covering layer becomes a chemically stable phase at the interface between the SiC fiber and the boron carbide, the SiC fiber functions as a reinforcement material also against thermal stress under high temperature to prevent the sintering between both of them even in a sintering temperature region, and the crack of the composite sintered body can be effectively reduced.
