PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can easily detect forgotten coating of a protective film. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display device provided with a liquid crystal display element, having a first and a second electrode substrates 1, 2 stuck together with a sealant 9 formed on their peripheries and a liquid crystal 10 enclosed between the first and the second electrode substrates, with at least one electrode substrate out of the first and the second electrode substrates 1, 2 having a transparent electrode 13 being extended to the outside of the sealant 9, the liquid crystal display element has a protective film 140 formed on at least one of the electrode substrate out of the first and the second electrode substrates 1, 2, protecting a part of the transparent electrode 13 outside of the sealant 9. The protective film contains a fluorescent colorant, a luminous paint or an ultraviolet ray luminous paint.
