PURPOSE: A method for sensing the position of a tiltable or variable steering column is provided to equalize the output signal of a sensor sensing the tilt and the telescopic length of the column, to remove a positioning error and to prevent stress from generating. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer(10) adjusts the tilt and the length of a steering column(20) by supplying a tilt control signal and a telescopic control signal into each driving unit and the microcomputer stores final value of sensors in an EEPROM(12) by moving the steering column up to one directional end. Likewise, the final value of sensors is stored when the steering column moves to the other directional end. Therefore, the position of the steering column is sensed by information in the EEPROM and signals of sensors.
