A tree stand (10) for supporting various types of trees has a container (12) with a bottom (14) and a sidewall (16) extending upwardly therefrom where the lower end of the tree (18) is inserted into the container (12). A plurality of bolts (20) are threadedly connected to the sidewall (16) and have an inner end (22) thereof projecting into the container toward the lower end of the tree (18). In order to provide sufficient support for various types of trees while not damaging the tree (18) supported in the tree stand (10), the tree stand (10) further includes a plurality of support blocks (26) having a generally concave surface (28) for engaging the lower end of the tree (18). The support blocks (26) include a bearing plate (30) therein and a bore (34) extending from a surface opposite the generally concave surface (28) to the bearing plate (30). The inner end (22) of the plurality of bolts (20) extends through the bore (34) for contacting the bearing plate (30) whereby rotation of the bolts (20) in a first direction will urge the support blocks (26) into intimate contact with the tree (18). The inner end (22) of the bolts (20) is freely rotatable within the bore (34) of the support blocks (26).
