With reference to Fig.3, a reciprocating pump or compressor has an alignment adapter (90) for providing a self-aligning piston rod (92). The alignment adapter (90) and a clamp (74) couple the piston rod (92) to a crosshead extension rod (70). The alignment adapter (90) provides compensation for misalignment of the longitudinal axis of the crosshead extension rod (70) with the longitudinal axis of the piston rod (92). The alignment adapter (90) has a hemispherical cavity (90e), and the piston rod (92) has a hemispherical projection (92a) that matingly fits within the hemispherical cavity (90e). A split ring (94) is received in a groove (92c) in the piston rod (92), and the piston rod (92) and the split ring (94) are received in a cylindrical cavity (90c) in the alignment adapter (90) for use in coupling the piston rod (92) to the alignment adapter (90). With reference to Fig.8, a piston head (114) has a hemispherical cavity (114b) for receiving a hemispherical projection (110d) on a piston rod (110). The piston head (114) has a longitudinal midpoint (114h), and the hemispherical projection (110d) has a focal point (110f) for a radius of curvature. The focal point (110f) is located forward of the midpoint (114h) so that the piston rod (110) tends to pull the piston head (114), which allows the piston head (114) to align within a piston cylinder (86). |
