The method involves spatially aligning three mutually orthogonal rotation rate sensors so that one lies parallel to the plane of the ecliptic, the second lies in the plane in which the earth's axis of rotation lies, and the third lies in a plane orthogonal to the other two planes. The sensors are aligned by comparing the output signals with three preset signals obtained from the three components of the maximum amplitude of the rotation rate of the earth. The longitude and latitude on earth can then be calculated from the sensor angles w.r.t. a local plumb line vertical, using a precise time measure.
