The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for a long nip roll, especially a pressure shoe roll for a shoe calender, which long nip roll comprises: a pressure shoe roll 1 with a flexible roll shell 2; an inner pressure shoe unit 3 in the pressure shoe roll 1 for loading and pressing the flexible roll shell 2 against a counter-roll 4 of the pressure shoe roll, the long nip N being closed and in use; and at least one inner support shoe device 10 in the pressure shoe roll 1 for damping vibrations in the flexible roll shell 2 and for supporting the latter. In order to minimise the friction forces and to support the roll shell and prevent the vibrations, the invention is characterised in that the support shoe device 10 is held either in the readiness position VA, in which it lies at a distance from the inner surface 5 of the flexible roll shell 2, or in an operating position TA, in which it bears against the inner surface 5 of the flexible roll shell 2 or lies at a short distance therefrom.
