A method for forming a metal ion intercalation compound and the use thereof as the cathode material in an alkali metal battery. In one embodiment, a metal ion intercalation compound is mixed with an electrically conductive material. The metal ion intercalation compound is represented by the formula: MxTyAz wherein M is an alkali metal ion, wherein T is a metal ion capable of existing in more than one stable oxidation state, and wherein A is a multi-element anion with a negative charge greater than 1.
