PRODUCTION OF METHANESULFONATE COMPOUND

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a methanesulfonate compound useful as a production intermediate for an agent for the treatment of diabetes in high efficiency and yield by a highly practical method by reacting a specific oxazolyl alcohol derivative with mesyl chloride in toluene in the presence of a specific base catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II (Ms is methylsulfonyl) [e.g. 2-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolyl)ethyl methanesulfonate] is produced by reacting an oxazolyl alcohol derivative of formula I [R is a (substituted) aromatic hydrocarbon group, a (substituted) alicyclic hydrocarbon group or the like; Me is methyl] [e.g. 2-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolyl)ethanol] with mesyl chloride in toluene in the presence of triethylamine as a base catalyst preferably at 0-50 deg.C for 1-10 hr.
