PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound that has excellent compatibility to resin binders and excellent electron transport properties and is useful as an electron transfer substance. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1-R12 are each H, a halogen, a (substituted) 1-6C alkyl, a (substituted) cyclic alkyl, a (substituted) aryl or the like; or two in these groups link to each other to form a (substituted) cyclic alkylene or a (substituted) aromatic ring; A1 and A2 are each O, CR13R14 (R13 and R14 are each cyano or alkoxycarbonyl)], typically the compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is prepared by dissolving a phenol in an organic solvent such as chloroform, dichloromethane, benzene or the like and oxidizing the phenol with an oxidizing agent, for example, potassium permanganate, potassium ferricyanide, manganese dioxide and the like.
