PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten back focus and also to improve the utilization efficiency of illuminating light by providing a polarizing beam splitter or the like for transmitting first video light and also for reflecting second video light obtained by a second video light-forming means to emit it to a projection optical system. SOLUTION: An illuminating light emitted by a light beam 2 is resolved into an illuminating light LP of P-polarization and the illuminating light LS of S-polarization, by the polarizing beam splitter 51 after it is converted into a nearly parallel light beam by a convex lens 5. The illuminating light LP out of these is emitted to a reflection type liquid crystal panel PG for green, and an illuminating light LS is emitted to the reflection type liquid crystal panels PB and PR for red and blue. Then, the illuminating light LP is supplied for the formation of the video light LG for the green, so that the utilization efficiency of the illuminating light is improved by that amount. Also, it is constituted so as only to synthesize the video light formed on the rear side of the polarizing beam splitter 51 for the back focus, so that the back focus is shortened. |
