PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 5-aminomethyl-2-chlorothiazole or its salt by which the yield is better and reactional and purifying operations are simple. SOLUTION: 2-Chloro-5-chloromethylthiazole or its salt is reacted with ammonia in methanol solvent under a pressure to produce 5-aminomethyl-2- chlorothiazole or its salt. According to the method for production, the 5- aminomethyl-2-chlorothiazole useful as an intermediate for insecticides can be produced in high yield by simpler operations than those in a conventional method. Furthermore, an aqueous solution of the 5-aminomethyl-2-chlorothiazole salt without containing by-products can industrially and advantageously be produced.
