PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive optical module which is capable of preventing the contamination of optical fibers and a packaging method of the optical module 1 capable of preventing tan increase in connection loss by a packaging stage. SOLUTION: The optical module 1 consisting of a package 2 provided with leads 3, a plastic ferrule 15 disposed to project to the package 2 and a heat resistant and adiabatic protective cap 16 put on the ferrule 15 is packaged by soldering the leads 3 in the state of putting the protective cap 16 on the ferrule 15. Namely, the plastic ferrule is used and, therefore, the cost is lower than ferrules made of metals and ceramics. When the optical module is not connected to the connector on the other side, the protective cap 16 is kept put on the ferrule 15, by which the contamination of the optical fibers may be prevented.
