PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a gradation process in a short time, by painting out dots in an outline and dots crossing the outline with bit map data. SOLUTION: A vector font data analyzing section 3 reads vector font data corresponding to a character string for display from a vector font data storage section 2, and calculates an outline (contour line) for shaping a character. An edge processing section 4 performs a gradation process of an edge of the outline when linear vector data is not horizontal or vertical. A display bit map data section 5 paints out square dots in the outline with bit map data. Such calculated gradation of the square dots crossing the outline is specified with digits after the decimal point x-coordinate or y-coordinate for the gradation process, and the dots in the outline and the dots crossing the outline are painted over with the bit map data.
