A receiver (5) is used to receive optical signals, and transmitter (4) transmits optical signals. The former is preferably in the form of optical sensors coupled to optical fibres. A microcontroller (6) and an analog-to-digital converter (17) and a peripheral bus connecting device (8) are also provided. A device (16) is provided between the receiver and the microcontroller for pre-processing the received optical signals. The received optical signals may be pre-processed in an analog fashion, e.g. using an analog integrator.
