The invention concerns a gas-filled photon detector comprising, in a gas chamber (2), a cathode (18) pierced with holes (20) and an anode (14) comprising a set of elementary anodes (12) insulated from one another. The cathode outer surface is coated with a photoionisable layer (26) maintained at the same potential as said cathode and supplying electrons under the impact of photons. The anode is brought to a potential sufficiently high relative to the cathode to generate, in the space (A) included therebetween, an electric field (EA) enabling to attract almost all the electrons into said space through the holes, then multiplying said electrons by an avalanche process. The invention is applicable to high-energy physics and in the medical field.
