In apparatus for measuring the angular position of a shaft 1, a transducer 2 produces a first pulse sequence having a period corresponding to a displacement of 1 degree and whose phase relative to a reference pulse sequence constitutes a fine measurement of the displacement, and this phase difference is measured, compared with the measurement obtained in an immediately preceding interval to determine the sense of rotation, and a counter is stepped forwards or backwards to record each increment of 1 degree in either direction. The reference pulse sequence is obtained from 1000 : 1 sealer 5 fed by 1 Mc/s. source 3, the pulse on lead 16 which follows each priming pulse from 5 : 1 sealer 211 opens gate 17, and the next pulse on lead 15 closes gate 17 so that a number of 1 Mc/s. pulses is passed to counter 20 representing the fine measurement. Sealer 211 causes a fine measurement to be made 200 times a second, this rate being chosen so that the maximum displacement of shaft 1 which can occur between two successive measurements is less than 1 degree. The fine measurement registered in counter 20 is allocated to one of three ranges I, II, III corresponding to counts of 0-199, 200-799, 800-999, lead 31 being energized when a count of 200 is reached (range II) and lead 32 being energized if a count of 800 (range III) is reached. Bistable circuits 35, 36 are thus set in combination to represent the range reached, the preceding range indication being transferred at the beginning of the measurement interval to bi-stable circuits 39, 40. A comparison of the settings of circuits 35, 36 and 39, 40 is performed by gates 50, 51 such that switch 54 is opened if a transition III # I occurs and switch 55 is opened if a transition I # III occurs, whereby one or more pulses are passed from source 58 to counter 60 to add or subtract 1 degree from the angle registered therein.
