PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an orthogonal transfer system imaging apparatus and an image data forming method in which high speed transfer of toner image is realized by reducing the volume of image data to be stored during transfer. SOLUTION: An image data to be transferred at a time is divided into a plurality of blocks (i)-(vi) in the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction of print sheet and written sequentially in an image data memory 12 in the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction. The image data is then read out in the carrying direction from a block where writing into the image data memory 12 has ended. Since the volume of image data to be stored during transfer is reduced, the time to be elapsed before reading out the image data after it is written in can be shortened and the memory capacity can be reduced.
