PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect in a non-contact state the tip surface of a rod by a first photoelectric sensor by a method wherein a first photoelectric sensor is moved rearward or frontward at a low speed together with a first vice device without bringing a rod into abutment. SOLUTION: A first vice device 13 is provided with a first non-contact sensor 47 to detect that the tip end surface of a rob W is under a non-contact. A position detecting means 59 is provided to detect the position in a longitudinal direction of the first non-contact sensor 47. A second non-contact sensor 63 to detect in a non-contact state the end face of the rod W is arranged in the vicinity of the rear side of a cutting position. A control means is provided to control that when the tip end surface of the rod W is detected by the second non-contact sensor 63, drive of a carriage conveyor device 41 is stopped and when drive of the carriage conveyor device 41 is stopped, the first vice device 13 is moved rearward or frontward through operation of a vice moving means 25.
