Coloured copolymers are prepared by polymerizing (a) a metal complex of an azo dye containing at least one polymerizable, olefinically unsaturated group in the molecule, and (b) at least one uncoloured, olefinically unsaturated comonomer. Monomer (a) may be a 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 metal complex of an azo dye having the formula <FORM:1012497/C3/1> in which A and B are each a divalent benzene or naphthalene ring system or a divalent heterocyclic aromatic ring system, at least one of the radicals R1 and R2 is a vinyl group, acryloyl group, acryloylamino group, acryloyloxy group or a group having the formula <FORM:1012497/C3/2> in which n has a value from 1 to 6, and if only one of the radicals R1 and R2 is one of the said groups, the other is a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, nitro group, cyano group, sulphonic group, sulphonic ester group or sulphonamide group, and X1 and X2 are each a hydroxy group, carboxylic group, or primary or secondary amino group located in ortho-position to the azo group. The central atom in the monomer complex may be copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium or iron (such dye complexes being illustrated in Specification 885,814). Polymerization may be effected in solution or emulsion using initiators such as potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or redox systems. Examples illustrate the emulsion polymerization of some 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 cobalt azo dye complexes, the comonomers being selected from acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methacrylamide, N - methylol - methacrylamide and vinylidene chloride.
