1,052,895. Plutonium oxidation. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 1, 1964 [April 9, 1963], No. 13463/64. Heading G6R. Plutonium is oxidized in acid solution from the trivalent to the tetravalent state by the action of nitrous vapours. The solution treated may be obtained by extraction of an organic phase containing uranium and plutonium with aqueous nitric acid in the presence of a reducing agent, for example iron sulphamate. The oxidation is effected in a packed glass column down which the solution flows in countercurrent to the nitrous vapours. The vapours may be produced by reacting nitric acid with formaldehyde or with metallic iron or copper. The solution treated may alternatively be a sulphuric acid or a mixed sulphuric and nitric acid solution.
|
