The invention relates to a system (101) for storing electric energy which comprises an energy store (2) which via a power converter (3) can be coupled to a buffer store (4). To reduce electric losses during stand-by operations the invention provides for a free-wheeling path for the energy store (2) to be guided via a mechanical switch (22) by means of which the semiconductor valves of the power converter (3) can be electrically bridged. To reduce electric losses in the energy store (2) itself, said store is charged at a low charging voltage (UL) when in charge mode.
