An aesthetic appearance is imparted to a substrate by depositing a curable polymeric coating composition onto the substance and depositing a dichroic material into the wet, uncured polymer. By curing the polymer and applying and curing subsequent cured polymeric layers the desired effect is achieved. Preferably, a UV-curable polymer is used although an epoxy, or a catalyzed resin may be used as the polymer.
