PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to reduce or eliminate a stepping effect when an image of low resolution is electronically enlarged. SOLUTION: A local gradient can be calculated based on four directions for every pixel of an image. A 1st direction combined with the highest local gradient is selected. The value of a pixel is changed by the value of another pixel that is placed near the former pixel and along a 2nd direction rectangular to the 1st direction in order to smooth an image set in the 2nd direction. In terms of selection, the smoothed image data can be substantially sharpened by a method including the use of gradients. |
