The invention comprises a process in which metal modified polypropylene materials are dyed using dyes having the general formula R-N=N-R1-OH in which R is a hetrocyclic radical of the thiadiazole or triazole series, R1 denotes the radical of a phenolic or enolic coupling component in which the hydroxyl group is adjacent to the azo group. The dyestuffs may contain further substituents but must not bear sulphoric acid groups. The dyes are applied generally at 50-130 DEG C. in acidic, neutral or alkaline aquerous solutions or pastes in the presence of conventional reagents e.g. e.g., thickeners carriers, dispersing or emulsifying agents. After-treatments with detergents may be carried out. Many examples of dyes which could be used are given. Steaming under pressure at temperatures up to 130 DEG C. may be used to fix the dyeing. The polypropylene material used is pretreated with metal salts or is spun from polypropylene dopes containing the metal salts, especially salts of zinc and nickel, magnesium, copper or cobalt.
