PURPOSE: A method for controlling a backup speed of continuously variable transmission is provided to make a stable back up possible by preventing the limitless increase of the backup speed through controlling a motor after limiting the movement width of a variable pulley of a primary pulley and to prevent an accident caused by acceleration. CONSTITUTION: A continuously variable transmission is composed of a primary pulley, a DC motor, an ECU(Engine Control Unit) and a transmission control unit. Herein, if the transmission control unit senses a state of backup, it is converted to the state of backup by controlling a front and a rear converter. If the backup speed is under the speed set up in the transmission control unit in a backup process, a normal transmission is continuously accomplished since the primary is possible to be variable by not controlling the DC motor. On the other hand, if the backup speed is over the set up speed, the backup speed is set up not to be over the set up speed by preventing the variable pulley from changing after the DC motor is stopped.
